Get the Glow Juice!

As most of you may know by now…I’m a bit of a health nut. One of my main obsessions is FRESH JUICES!  I love them!! I try my best to make at least one a day ( in addition to my 2 litres of green smoothies).  Juices are amazing, because your body is able to absorb nutrients in such a way that allows it to focus it’s energy on recovering, not on digesting. Juicing is also great for people recovering from surgery or treating diseases, people with digestive issues, and the everyday health nut that wants to make sure they’re taking in optimal levels of fruits and vegetables! The other day I was feeling a bit sluggish and groggy, so I decided to make my favourite cleansing and detoxifying juice which I’ve nicknamed, Get the Glow…I felt so refreshed and energized after drinking it… it was amazing. I’ve shared the recipe below 🙂

Naturally, the morning is when our bodies go into detox mode and cleanse themselves from the previous day, and flush out any remaining impurities from our systems. My Get the Glow juice is so great for cleansing your body. It has great veggies like cucumbers, great for weight loss and reducing bloating (reduces water retention). They’re also great for curing digestive issues… and helping to rehydrate your system of a night of partying too hard…(ahhhh the dreaded hangover!!!).

Another great part of the juice is it’s use of lemons. Lemons are great to help your body become more alkaline, and thus, healthier and balanced.  They’re also great for fighting infection and boosting your immune system. Lemons are great for cleansing and purifying the liver (for all of you heavy drinkers out there..meet lemons..they are now your new best friend)

My favourite part about this juice is the ginger!! I know…some of you may not like the “spiciness” of ginger, but it has so many great health benefits one of which I take advantage of on a daily basis to help with digestion. As some of you may know, I’ve had severe digestive issues my whole life, and ginger is one of the most calming and nurturing things I’ve found to heal my insides!! Ginger is great for so many other aspects of your body including relief to arthritis and joint pain. Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory properties—can bring relief to sore muscles and joints. Also, ginger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly. In two clinical studies involving patients who responded to conventional drugs and those who didn’t, physicians found that 75% of arthritis patients experienced relief of pain and/or swelling. Ginger the miracle food…Cool eh??

Another great part of this juice is it’s use of fennel.  I know what you’re saying….what do you mean fennel in a juice?? Fennel is actually one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It’s full of phytonutrients and minerals! The most fascinating phytonutrient compound in fennel, is anethole. In animal studies, the anethole in fennel has repeatedly been shown to reduce inflammation and to help prevent the occurrence of cancer. In addition to its unusual phytonutrients, fennel is an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is the body’s primary water-soluble antioxidant, able to neutralize free radicals.

After hearing all of this amazing information…why not try this delicious juice for yourself??

Vegan Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal!

I love fall!! I’m addicted to sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, cinnamon, nutmeg, the changing colours of leaves, and the crisp smell of bon fires. It’s my absolute favourite time of year, and as Michael will tell you, I’m a bit of a fall addict. I love going to pumpkin patches, going out for apple cider, and making delicious baked goods and comfort food at home.

I was in the mood for a delicious hearty breakfast the other day, so I thought why not pumpkin oatmeal? I started playing around with some ingredients and created an awesome recipe! I know the idea of pumpkin might sound a little scary to some of you, but TRUST me it’s delicious!!! Even Michael was a little skeptical but after he tried it, he was in love (with the oatmeal that is…haha!). It has such an earthy, creamy, and sweet flavour you really can’t resist it! I’m just as addicted to this oatmeal as my RAW Chocolate Pudding!

This oatmeal also has some great health benefits!! Oats are high in fibre, protein, and help to regulate blood sugar levels. They also help to keep you feel fuller longer and lower your cholesterol! Pumpkin is also very nutritious food. It’s high in beta-carotene, a natural antioxidant, and a great vitamin for making  your skin glow 🙂 Vegetables high in beta-carotene also act as a natural sunscreen, and allow your body to absorb vitamin D from the healthy UV rays from the Sun!!

Here’s the recipe! It would be amazing as Thanksgiving Sunday Breakfast for the Family!! I think this is what we’ll be having at Kelly’s Bake Shoppe for breakfast this weekend!!

1 ½ cup Gluten Free Rolled Oats
 (Bob’s Red Mill)

1 Cup of Pumpkin Puree
 (Farmer’s Market)

1 Cup Organic Coconut Milk + 1 ½ cup FILTERED water

1 tablespoon Organic Vanilla
 (Simply Organic)

1 tsp Cinnamon

1 tsp Nutmeg

1/8 tsp Sea Salt

1/4 cup Maple Syrup

Mix all ingredients, except for oats into a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Add oats and let simmer uncovered for about 10-13 minutes, stirring occasionally.

MAKES 3 servings.

The finished product will be deliciously creamy!! ENJOY!

Feel free to top it with your favourite dairy free milk, extra cinnamon, or some more maple syrup or coconut sugar for an extra sweet fix!

Gluten-Free & Vegan Food Adventures in Ottawa!

So I thought I’d share my latest adventure! Michael and I went to Ottawa this past weekend to explore this beautiful city, eat some great vegan food, and maybe, just maybe, go white water rafting down the Ottawa River!

We arrived at the Arc The Hotel in Downtown Ottawa. It was lovely.  It is a boutique style hotel located just steps to Parliament Hill. We settled into our room and then we were off for dinner!

Erinn Weatherbie_Kelly Childs_Mike Rennie_Kelly’s bake Shoppe_Kelly’s xo_gluten free vegan baking_gluten free vegan recipes_green smoothies_Green smoothie recipes_inspiration_entrepreneur_gluten free vegan cookies_mother daughter team_childs and Weatherbie pantry_childs and Weatherbie_figyur food_Ken Childs_Burlington Bakery_Kale Smoothie Recipes_Butternut squash soup recipes_gluten free vegan cupcake recipes_

We’d heard amazing things amount about ZenKitchen (a completely vegan restaurant) so we thought we’d try it out. Well needless to say we didn’t leave disappointed! It was fantastic. They use local and organic ingredients whenever possible. We had the polenta fries and the bruschetta to start! OMG. They were devoured within minutes! Perfectly cooked and what a sauce to dip the ‘fries’ in….chipotle sauce. YUM!

Erinn Weatherbie_Kelly Childs_Mike Rennie_Kelly’s bake Shoppe_Kelly’s xo_gluten free vegan baking_gluten free vegan recipes_green smoothies_Green smoothie recipes_inspiration_entrepreneur_gluten free vegan cookies_mother daughter team_childs and Weatherbie pantry_childs and Weatherbie_figyur food_Ken Childs_Burlington Bakery_Kale Smoothie Recipes_Butternut squash soup recipes_gluten free vegan cupcake recipes_

We then had the Ravioli (gluten free too), and the Raw Burrito (GF too) for dinner. The flavours in those two dishes were absolutely incredible. An added bonus was that almost everything on their menu could be made gluten free (a great option for those of us a little sensitive to gluten…me! And for those wishing to abstain). We enjoyed ourselves so much, we ate here every night we were in Ottawa! I can’t believe it!

The next day was spent exploring Ottawa. We took a short drive to the Ottawa Farmers Market, which we found out is one of the largest local farmers markets in all of North America! We were absolutely blown away by the sheer size of it and the organic and local produce available in this market. Here’s what I had for lunch!! Baked Sweet potato with a homemade quinoa salad…Mmm…

We then took a stroll up to Parliament Hill and the Byward Market! It was great seeing so many local vendors with such support from the local community. After a long day of exploring we found a local health food store called Herb & Spice to stock up on healthy vegan snacks for our hotel room!

On our final day we took the plunge and went white water rafting. OMG it was ridiculously fun! We drove about 1 hour outside of Ottawa and arrived at RiverRun Rafting. The guides were fantastic. They explained everything so well and we felt completely safe and ready to run the rapids! Michael was a seasoned pro at this so it was more me that needed my nerves calmed :). So off we went for about 4-5 hours on the whitewater of Ottawa! We actually ended up going cliff jumping afterward (ahhh!! So scary) and swimming down the river (yes…in the rapids!!!) as well! Talk about doing one thing EVERY day to scare you! I DID IT!!

When we arrived back to base camp and our car, we were absolutely exhausted (and also completely exhilarated!). We then drove home…taking power nap shifts all along the way 🙂 !

It was a great trip, mostly because I was able to spend some quality time with my hunnie, eat some great food, and conquer my fears on the water!

Love,

Erinn
